The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation (TMFDC) is basically the same formation as The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble (TKDE) with one big difference. With TMFDC is all about live improvisation, while TKDE is mostly a studio project using predeterminated song structures. After releasing Antromorphic last year, TMFDC is back again with Egor, a new album full of live recorded improvisations..
Antromorphic was a claustrophobic dive into sixty minutes of pure minimalistic dark ambient soundscapes. The album is basically the musical equivalent of descending into a musical black hole. This time around, TKDE decided for a slightly lighter and diverse approach. Live improvisations are still at the heart of it all, however the more structured approach makes Egor a somewhat more accessible.
Egor also marks the return of jazz elements within The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation musical framework. The trombone parts by Hilary Jeffery and the soothing vocals by Charlotte Cegerra add some shades of light to the overall brooding dark atmosphere on this album, but also another layer of musical impending doom. This haunting feeling is further strengthened by the violin parts by Sarah Anderson and the electronic effects by Gideon Kiers.
The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation keeps on surprising and thrilling me with their unorthodox mixture of (freestyle) jazz, dark ambient, electronics and drone elements. Egor is a brilliant artistic statement of what can happen when vision and openmindness collide with sheer musical talent. This record is a prime candidate for my year list..
