From a different perspective, Fujii and Tamura team again on Live in Japan 2004, a quartet record that pairs the duo with Americans, bassist Mark Dresser and drummer Jim Black. Recorded in Japan in the summer of 2004, the Fujii-Dresser-Black trio, partners for about eight years, clearly enjoy the addition of Tamura to expand on four Fujii compositions previously waxed by the trio. As fans of the trio’s previous six records will know, the joy from the listener’s perspective is a result of watching these fearless improvisers experiment within Fujii’s open-ended compositions, always landing on their feet. The addition of Tamura may reign in the ensemble’s intensity just a tad, though he is the consummate colorist here and proves quite inspiring to the overall group dynamic.
