The new CD by Clint Listing: My Father, My Keeper is a unique way to say “hi” to dear old dad. Without a hint of sentimentality, Listing’s new CD has an introverted style with which to communicate his thoughts. The opening track, “A Night in Harlem” is a sexy, sax-driven, jazzy sea of moodiness that would seem to take one back to the nights when young Clint would be with Dad in the ‘hood; going to a gig, scoring, stopping by the liquor store or all of the above. The second track, “My Father’s Love of Jazz” is another slowed down ambient-jazz number. It looks like Dad’s jazz affinity was handed down to the son. From there it goes on in a similar vein: mellow, jazzy, ambient instrumentals with a hint of vocal stylings, throughout the CD.

Clint uses an admixture of synths, guitar and a saxophone that winds in & out, adding to the haunting of the album which all comes together to create a stylish record.

Although My Father, My Keeper can be cold at times, almost dehumanized in some parts, there’s a feel to it that makes one wonder what kind of memories Listing is trying to evoke. Is he pissed off at his dad? Is it a paean to a “wonderful guy” who impressed upon the young Clint the need to be nonconformist and creative and damn what anyone else thinks about you? Either way, it comes across as a dreamy, ethereal yet soulful collection of tunes; the best of which include the aforementioned first two tracks (“A Night in Harlem,” “My Father’s Love of Jazz”) plus the last two songs: “One’s Loss of Sanity,” a raucous, psychotic breakdown that tears at the synapses. After coming down, it goes into the perfect, mellower: “At the End of the World.”

The first seven tracks of the CD are what make up My Father, My Keeper. Next there are three “bonus tracks” – three songs that make up The Snow Ghost, an EP included on this CD. The three songs, “Traveling the Celestial Path”, “The Snow Ghost” and “Simplicity is Bliss” make up EP which is, all in all, pretty good on its own. The only thing that doesn’t quite fit here is that the continuity is a little tweaked; the two recordings should be listened to at different times. As a stand-alone EP, the three songs that make up The Snow Ghost are edgier; they don’t have the same introspective style as My Father… They’re angrier, more metallic; and a little schizoid. Maybe they probably should’ve been released separately, but with the mere three tracks it contains, it seems more cost-effective to release them together. Anyhow, the people at Autumn Wind Productions decided to add the bonus tracks to the CD. As long as you know where one ends and the other begins you’ll be all right. Just relax and let My Father, My Keeper take you on a dreamy quest for some personal, existential truth, but be forewarned that the bonus The Snow Ghost EP switches gears in a hurry, so be prepared to wake up after track seven.
