"Bringing the club floor yet closer to the living room sofa, this is another double-disc set bringing the Renaissance nights to your home. Your host for this set is trance-house Brit David Seaman, and with his deft sense of mood and tempo the driving force here, Desire starts off slowly yet has absorbed you wholly by the time Solid Sessions' high-energy, uptempo classic "Janiero" slides into your ears. Never obvious, never cheesy yet always populist enough to attract clubbing novices, Desire builds slowly to a cruise-control 90 miles per hour, Seaman more interested in weaving trance-house dreamscapes than showering the room with beats per minute. Some of 2000's classic names resurface ("Pete Heller Presents Sputnik," Way Out West's "Mindcircus"), but so too does Seaman's creative use of Placebo's "Passive Aggressive," Junkie XL's "B Y Whop Too Be Y," and Finlay Quaye's "Spiritualized." A fine set, and one that is rich and decadent in the finer elements of trance-house without ever being ostentatious or overbearing. Indeed, if the more sophisticated hedonistic Romans enjoyed a bit of electronica, this might well have been their mix." --Steffan Chirazi
Disc One starts off nicely with a housy/chill mix of A Guy called Gerald's 'Humanity', then effortlessly slides into the rumbling bass hook of 'Struggle for Pleasure'. Layering the 'Praying' vocal over Finlay Quaye's 'Spiritualized' saves us, the listener, from the monotony of a drawn-out mix, and the mumbles nicely build up the shimmering sweep of Lovesky's 'Drums 4 Better Daze.' The Peter Heller remix of Moby's 'Southside' bears almost no resemblance to the original track and sounds, to be frank, like a thousand other trance tunes released in the last two year--good but unoriginal. Next comes the beautiful 'Janeiro', probably the best track on the CD. Though extremely repetitive, this usually negative quality (for me) actually work in its favor, extending the climax with distant chimes and a haunting vocal. Gorgeous. Unfortunately, the rest of the disc quickly loses its way: Danny Howell's 'Breathe' is unremarkable trance-house, truly drifting to nowhere; the throb-stomp of Pappa and Gilbey's 'Void' gets old upon third listen; and the mix Dave chooses of Sister Bliss's 'Deliver Me' is the worst of the three I've heard so far. Then comes 'Stylus Trouble', easily the most overblown track of 2001--really, this sounds like bad video-game music from the halcyon days of Nintendo. Finally comes an inferior version of Schiller's 'Ruhe' that just sort of plods along until the beats strip away to silence...at last.
Disc Two fares better, beginning with the classic epic feel of 'Travelouge' before shifting into the dark industrial-tinged 'Elisium — Part One,' a collaboration between Sasha and Quivver. With its delayed breakdown and 'Xpander'-like bridge, this is one of the best tracks on the album. The following track, 'Waiting' combines a creepy vocal about clubs, drugs and betrayal with a squawk-squeak techno riff pitched low; not great, but it does set up the James Holden remix of 'Inner Laugh' quite well. Dave stumbles here, taking forever to mix in Blackwatch's 'Foreshadow' but redeems himself by brilliantly throwing the diva vocals of 'So Strong' over Slacker's 'Musifon'. On the other hand, the Placebo acappella over 'Oracle' is just diversion from what is essentially a long, long warm-up track into Jimmy Van M's 'Love like Sleep,' not bad, but then, not great either, at least until the spectacular breakdown. Next comes a couple predictable chuggers from Junkie XL and Praha before the conclusion track (one of Dave's specialties), Way Out West's 'Mindcircus', which starts great but goes on about two minutes too long.
