It was back in 1959 that the classically trained Loussier formed his Play Bach trio with bass player Pierre Michelot and drummer Christian Garros. The trio concentrated on the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, remaining close to the music as written but adding pulsating and tasteful jazz rhythms to good effect; Loussier sold over six million copies of his albums before retiring to live in Provence in 1980. This two-CD set is by his new trio (Vincent Charbonnier on bass with drummer Andre Arpino) but the all-Bach programme is retained. Frankly there's not a lot of jazz here in terms of improvisation and I think I could have lived without the Allegro section of the Brandenburg Concerto becoming a showcase for Arpino. Everything is beautifully played and Loussier is certainly a fine keyboard technician with a beautiful gradation of touch, but some may wonder why such an obviously talented musician has decided to recycle his work of more than three decades ago. Nostalgia buffs may even detect a whiff of Hamlet cigars when listening to the Aria from Bach's Suite in D.AM, gramophone.net

PS
