The City Waites is Britain’s longest established ensemble specialising in early English popular music. Their repertoire focuses on the songs, dances and ballads that were heard in the theatre, tavern and countryside during the 17th century — the music of the common man.

Their schedule has taken them to major venues throughout the world including the Middle and Far East, the USA, France, Denmark, Yugoslavia and the Netherlands. Recent activities also include BBC broadcasts, numerous UK festivals, music for TV documentaries (‘The History of Britain’ and ‘Fun With Wigs’), concerts for the National Trust, London’s Barbican Centre and Queen Elizabeth Hall, and collaborations with the Royal National Theatre (‘Il Campiello’, ‘School for Wives’, ‘The London Cuckolds’), Royal Shakespeare Company (‘Singing Simpkin’), and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre (‘As You Like It’).

The City Waites featured in the film Elizabeth, performed on the QE2’s World Cruise, and recently toured the Philippines and Columbia with assistance from the British Council. They have received support from Early Music organisations including York Early Music Foundation and the Early Music Network. They have performed before Her Majesty the Queen, and were awarded a research grant from the Arts Council of England.
